Badminton

Everyone has likely seen the sport badminton at some point in their life. In fact, many people probably have one of those nine sports in one set that includes a net along with all the paraphernalia for the sport like badminton racquets and birdies or shuttlecocks. Many of these family sports sets also includes to badminton poles and even the rules of badminton. However, most people who just play for fun in their backyard don’t really abide by any rules; they just wing it.

The history of badminton can be traced back to the ancient Greeks who played similar game. The badminton techniques, rules and such morphed as time went on and other cultures started playing as well. Today, badminton is a competitive sport and an Olympic event. All competitive badminton is played on an indoor badminton court. The basic badminton rules have changed somewhat throughout badminton history. However, today the goal is to earn twenty-one points before the opposing team. When a player serves, the opposite side must hit the shuttlecock over the net in one try without it hitting the floor. Once the shuttlecock hits the floor, the play is over and the next person serves.

Some countries are more enthusiastic about competitive badminton than others. Indeed, the UK is one of the most enthusiastic countries about competitive badminton.

If you are serious about getting into the sport competitively, you will have to have all the proper badminton equipment such as the shuttlecocks and the badminton rackets. These rackets are a lot lighter than its cousin, the tennis racket. Many players prefer the rackets with lighter strings rather than the thicker, heavier ones. Also, you will have to learn the basic badminton techniques such as serving, volleying and understanding the rules and the different ways to perform badminton shots. To keep your agility and speed up to par, you will also have to learn the basic badminton drills.

Depending on where you live, you may or may not find competitive badminton leagues. However, if you are just in it for the fun, just be sure to have one of those nine in one sports sets as mentioned before. That way, you can install it in your yard and practice and play badminton any time you want to. And if you get tired of playing, you can try another sport that uses a net like volleyball.
